All action (acts of creation), on some level, involve the Deity (Creator), along with varying levels of complete freedom (known in traditional theology as "Free Will") that is always present in the actions of the creature. Process Evolution operates by a principle known in PanenDeism as "Divine Attraction." To better understand this principle, an "updated" understanding of the underlying nature of physical reality will be helpful.

All matter in the universe can be thought of as existing on higher or lower "levels of Being" (known in PanenDeism as "Evolutionary Strata"). The lower the level (subatomic particle, molecule, cell), the less amount of complete freedom available for self-creation. The higher the level (organism, lifeform, sentient being), the greater degree of creative freedom available. Inherent in all matter is an element of creation, or "spark of Divinity", that can actually be described as spiritual in nature. Until recently, it was thought that physical reality was composed of "solid matter." Quantum Physics teaches us that matter is now largely considered an antiquated concept. Physical reality is actually not "solid" at all. All matter is composed of energy; but not just energy- intelligent energy!

Whenever an action is required by an element of creation (from the subatomic particle to the sentient being), a "Divine" or "Ideal" choice of action is always offered and available from the Deity, either consciously or unconsciously, and is known in PanenDeism as "The Proleptic Urge."

A spiritual devotion based on Reason, such as that offered in PanenDeism/Process Deism, is not just an interesting proposition- It will become a critical component of our very survival as a species as future technology continues to blur the lines of accepted societal ethics.

As our technology continues to advance, individual empowerment through that same technology will soon reach a critical mass. As positive and potentially life-changing as this empowerment might become, the cold reality is that, left unchecked by a powerless and antiquated theology developed during the mythological Iron Age, this technological empowerment threatens to destroy organized society as we know it today. Our technology will continue to provided us with the ever-increasing ability of "god-like" manipulation of our individual bodies and of our planetary environment. A spiritual philosophy that is broad enough to encompase all lifeforms and deep enough to embrace all future technology MUST be based on the underlying understanding of that same technology. It is, in my opinion, absolutely imperative for the survival of our species that we seek out this kind of spirituality for ourselves so that we might develop the "emotional intelligence" to prevent our scientific advances from wiping out hundreds of years of societal evolution.

In Process Deism, a "teleology", or a possible purpose and direction for Creation itself, can be detected. Although the discussion of the details of this teleology goes far beyond the limits of this small article, I believe that we can demonstrate a very strong philosophical argument for an amazing conclusion, as it relates to the very purpose of life itself in the universe.


As controversial and, at the same time, life-changing as this proposed "teleology" might be, the conclusion can be summarized as follows..

Combining a unique philosophical approach toward solid Aristotelian principles of logic with the implications of modern "Process Thought", it can be argued that the real "engine" of Evolution (or, "Process Evolution" as it is known in PanenDeism) is an everywhere-present, unbelievably intelligent, creative Lifeforce that is gently "pulling" the consciousness of evolved beings along a path towards a possible, but NOT guaranteed, Divine Ideal. This Ideal is a Divine "image" of what is to come, should these beings accept the impulses of direction provided by the Deity, for that particular species and is known in Process Deism as the "Proleptic Urge."

With the complete freedom ("Free Will")to either yield to this "Proleptic Urge", or not, Humanity appears to be involved in a process of "self-creation" that could eventually lead to our development as a race of fully self-actualized, "Deified" beings. With complete control over the manipulation of physical reality, from the programming of genetically flawless biological creatures for particular tasks or purposes, to an acquired human immortality, to the tera-forming of an entire planet to suit the needs of one of our particular societies, the actions of these future humans (or, "transhumans", as they are known in Process Deism) would be indistinguishable from magic by today's standards. Our Spirituality must have the power, the depth and the breadth to emcompass such a far-reaching future.

Relying on a theology that has proven to be too powerless to fight the temptation of killing each other in countless religious wars and jihads and too impotent to control the urges of the Pontiff's priests to molest our children, the time has come to "upgrade" our Spirituality by basing it on one of the greatest gifts God has ever given us- Reason.

Just "outside the gates" of Traditional Christianity and it's "revealed truth" of what "...God must Be, in order to Be at all", Process Deism, a PanenDeistic approach, is waiting- if you dare.
